*Lance corporal was not a rank but an appointment handed to private soldiers undertaking the role of a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). It was an appointment that could be removed at anytime by the man’s Commanding Officer (CO). In contrast, those soldiers holding  the rank of full corporal could only be demoted by court-martial.
